The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict is observed annually on November 6th. The day was established by the United Nations in 2001 to raise awareness about the damage to the environment caused by armed conflicts and the need to protect natural resources during times of war.
Armed conflicts can have devastating effects on the environment, including the destruction of ecosystems, pollution of water and soil, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity. The observance highlights the importance of safeguarding natural resources, not only for environmental protection but also for maintaining peace and stability. The UN also stresses that the environment should not be used as a weapon or casualty in warfare.
On this day, various events and campaigns take place to promote sustainable practices during conflicts and post-conflict reconstruction.
